Nurturing a Child's Natural Wonder.
At Walden, we nurture a child's natural wonder and personal dignity.
We provide a personalized, developmentally appropriate program that encourages responsibility, initiative, child-led inquiry, ethical behavior, and excellence.
We promote positive conflict resolution skills, understanding, and creativity in problem solving.
Children learn academic skills and concepts through experience and Socratic discussion, as well as through direct instruction and practice.
We teach children to value and respect diversity.
We strive, therefore, to lay the foundation for wisdom, to encourage the spirit of Renaissance learning, and to teach that we all have stewardship for the world in which we live.
Encouraging child-led inquiry
Guiding our practice are the interests, talents, and skills of each child, as deep understandings and connections are key attributes in a progressive environment. Based on John Dewey’s philosophy that education begins with the curiosity of the learner, we utilize a spiral path of inquiry: asking questions; investigating solutions; creating new knowledge as we gather information; discussing our discoveries and experiences; and reflecting on our newfound knowledge. We deliver our program in multi-year groups called “cores” that offer children the opportunity to grow and develop at their own pace without being held to a specific age or grade level.
